Fruit of the In-law Tree
My in-laws are funny people. I enjoy spending time with them, and I appreciate the lengths they go to in order to ensure my happiness while staying with them, but sometimes I do not understand their methods.
This is something which actually happened, although the number of berries is slightly exaggerated. I must admit that I did enjoy the berries, but I don’t know how I could have prompted them to believe that I wanted an entire large bowl to myself. Berries are good, but I don’t usually make it a habit to devour large bowls of them as if they were a standalone meal. On this occasion, I made an exception. What else could I do?

Here’s the part of the story you’re missing…
“Wow, look! A berry sale! John, honey, we should buy them!”
“But Marsha, what would we do with them?”
“Oh, I’ll use them to make jelly. And if not, I’m sure we’ll think of something! They’re so yummy and they’re on sale!”
Later that week…
“Hello, do you like berries?”
“Uh, yes… I do like berries.”
And that shirt they gave you? Here’s what you missed…
“John, I applied for another credit card at the mall today. They gave me a free shirt just for applying!”
“Marsha, that’s very um… thoughtful, but I’ve outgrown a size large and it’s not really my style.”
“But John, it’s a nice shirt…”
Later that week…
“Do you use wear size large shirt?”
“Uh, yes… I do wear size large shirt.”
